The validity of the Bible?

04Nov08

If man wrote the Bible, than how is it accurately labeled “The Word of God”?

I love questions like this. My friend Gary sent me this, and it’s probably one of the best things I’ve read in a few weeks.

Many people struggle with the idea that man wrote the Bible, I don’t know why, because, after all, man did write the Bible (Hold Spirit inspired). But the fight is really with the idea that if man wrote the Bible, and man is not perfect, then therefore the Bible is not perfect…..and why should I pay attention?

However, why is it that Academia requires we purchase textbooks written by man? Isn’t our birth record (certificate) written by man? When my 17 year old takes a motor vehicle test, doesn’t he study the DMV manual for the rules of the road in order to pass the test? On the back of a photo dated 1907, are the words, “Alvin Demers, six months old” (my grandfather). Really? is it my grandfather?

On the most basic level, man needs to record events to prove his existence. I don’t care if he painted it on his cave walls, there is some evidence of his existence. How does God prove himself to man? By showing up in the lives of those who ask him to dwell there. When man lives with God, there will be evidence of this relationship. The Bible is evidence of a God that dwelt among His creation. If there is evidence of my birth, then surely there is evidence of my mothers birth. On literal terms, the Bible can easily be trusted. Stories of the Bible are proven over and over again through archeology findings and technology.

I cannot see God, no one has. But on the pages of sixty-six books, He left His living message that is relevant for everyone today. Why should we trust a textbook that has been revised 4 times in ten years over a Bible that has sustained the test of time? Of course men wrote the Bible, but they lived and breathed with the One who inspired them to write it. Being in a relationship with someone and writing about it, is better than just being acquainted with someone and writing about it.

Great response. I have been a Christian for many years and have always believed the Bible to be God’s word, but have not be able to articulate it the way that you did in this post. Thank you for words.
