Future Worship

01Oct08

I love music and I love progress. About a decade ago Hillsong revolutionized what “worship music” could be and sound like. They’re doing it again with Hillsong United, their YOUTH BAND. There are two other guys that I love listening to because I believe they are changing the standard of what’s acceptable for large gatherings of worship.

Criteria for congregation worship songs used to be something like this:

  • must have repeating phrases
  • must contain lots of scripture quotatons
  • must be incredibly easy to sing

Now, none of these qualities are bad, in fact, I use them a lot when I write songs. But Phil Wickham and Jason Morant challenge this. They write in their own unique style, that sometimes reminds me of bands like U2, Coldplay, and Travis. They also contain a lot of themes from scripture; just wrapped in their own words and artistic expression. Some of their songs are really easy, some are incredibly complicated to sing. Some make you cry. I love it.

If I need a boost of creativity, I listen to one of these two guys. There’s nothing like worshiping Jesus with their songs while working and getting inspired.

Some of my favorite tunes by them:

  1. Phil Wickham is brilliant. I was turned on to him about a year ago and have become a huge fan since that time. Divine Romance is brilliant.
